When a card reader fails the cashiers second option is to key in the card numbers manually. This will help get your customer out the door, but it will usually result in heavy penalizations for accepting what is referred to as a 'card-not-present transaction.' Credit card companies charge more money on these types of payments because they are considered high-risk transactions, and are a major route of credit card fraud.
Having a point of sale (POS) terminal or a credit card reader that won't scan is not only a major annoyance to the customer, but is also costly to your business in the form of lost revenue and higher transaction fees. Head cleaning cards are used to clean the sensitive reader heads inside your POS terminal or credit card reader. These card readers are subjected to a lot of abuse from the heavy usage they undergo. Dirt, dust, lint, oils, makeup, lotions and pretty much anything else that might be found on a persons hands are transferred to their credit cards, and then run through the scanner. These contaminants then migrate to the sensitive reader head inside your card reader. When enough of these contaminants build up on the reader head you will begin getting bad scans.
When these bad scans start happening companies will often end up making a service call to a technician. In some cases companies even replace their dysfunctional terminal with a new one. It can be very costly to replace this equipment, or to have a technician come out and repair your terminal. And more often than not, it's totally unnecessary.
Simple preventative maintenance with a cleaning card on a regular basis can and will eliminate most of these problems.
